Internship 2018 - Directing & Education

Spencer Community Theatre’s Internship Program is designed to train the next generation of theatre artists in the skills necessary to become a successful member of the theatre community, as well as to foster the appreciation of community theatre: theatre for all. We offer practical hands-on experience tailored to suit the needs of our interns in order to provide a unique, individualized experience. While immersed in the world of Community and Children’s Theatre, our interns gain experience and knowledge to become well-rounded theatre practitioners. Spencer Community Theatre is one of the largest community theatres in Iowa and produces eight productions every season in addition to offering the area’s largest complement of children’s educational programming.

The Children’s Theatre Directing and Education Intern is responsible for serving as a Director and Assistant Director for our summer children’s theatre productions and to assist in developing and leading children’s theatre educational camps, classes and workshops. Responsibilities for this internship include directing the younger children’s production for youth age 6-14, assistant directing the teen production, and teaching skills such as acting, voice, creative dramatics, movement for the theatre, improvisation, and other theatre-related skills. Students studying theatre and/or education are encouraged to apply.  The Children’s Theatre Directing & Education Intern works an average of 45 hours per week.  Internship begins late May and runs through early August (dates are somewhat flexible, based on school & activity schedule of the intern. All interns receive a stipend of $1,500 and cooperation for college credit (pending approval from intern’s college or university).

We offer our interns extensive guidance and hands-on experience in development and programming in order to foster this unique skill set.  Interns are vital and valued part of SCT’s small, tight-knit staff.  Additionally, we offer: Cooperation for college credit, pending approval from your college or university; a stipend of $1,500 and a tax free housing stipend of $1,000; a flexible schedule designed to suit your needs to the best of our ability; an experienced mentor who will guide and support your work; and a great deal of creativity and autonomy in carrying out your tasks.

Interns will need excellent communication, organizational, and writing skills.  Previous experience in directing is required. Experience in youth theatre education is strongly preferred. Interns should possess strong self-motivational skills that enable him/her to use time efficiently, solve problems effectively and creatively, and try a variety of methods to achieve a desired effect. A significant portion of this internship involves working directly with children of all ages. Applicants with a background in children’s programming, an upbeat personality, and flexible work style will be strongly preferred.
